There are a million and one blog posts out there that tell you what to wear and where to shop for your photo sessions (heck I've written them!). But there isn't a lot of advice out there about what not to wear at your fall mini session. Your choice of wardrobe plays a crucial role in creating stunning and timeless photographs. I always encourage letting your personal style to shine through and I also have a few guidelines to ensure that your attire photographs well and enhances the overall aesthetic of your portraits.

  1. Avoid Overly Bright Colors: While vibrant colors can be visually appealing, some just don't photograph well. Neon and overly bright colors can distract from your location and may not translate well in photographs. Instead, opt for rich tones that complement your skin tone and your location. Super bright red/pink/orange create a weird reflection on skin, so it's best to avoid wearing shirts in those colors (for pants, skirts and accessories, it is fine).
  2. Say No to Logos and Busy Patterns: I love mixing color and pattern, so don't be afraid of that, but avoid clothing with large logos or busy patterns that may draw attention away from the main focus—you! Simple, timeless patterns or solid colors tend to work best for fall sessions. Subtle textures like cable-knit sweaters or tweed jackets can add depth to your outfit without being overpowering.
  3. Avoid Matchy-Matchy Outfits: Coordinating outfits with your family or group is a fantastic idea, but avoid matching colors and styles too closely. A variety of complementary colors and textures can add visual interest to the overall composition of the photographs. Aim for a cohesive color palette rather than identical outfits.
  4. Stay Clear of Season-Inappropriate Clothing: Texas is a tricky time for fall photos. I start my fall minis at the end of August when we're still having our warmest weather and go into early November when we can have temps from the 40's to the 90's! My big tip? Let your location (and the weather) be your guide. If we are at the beach in August or September, go with flowy, summery clothes, if we're outdoors in November, break out the layers. If we're indoors then really anything goes. The last thing you want in your family photos are sweat stains and kids that are making it known how uncomfortable they are!
  5. Avoid Clothing That Doesn't Reflect Your Style: My most important style tip is this: it's crucial to stay true to your personal style. If you're not comfortable in what you're wearing, it will likely show in your photos. Feel free to add small personal touches that make your outfit uniquely yours—whether it's a favorite accessory or a piece of clothing that holds sentimental value.

Remember, the goal of your fall mini session is to capture the essence of this beautiful season while highlighting your personality and connection with your loved ones. By avoiding these wardrobe pitfalls, you'll be well on your way to creating timeless and visually striking photographs that you'll cherish for years to come.
